Add page numbered grid to overview map

I have a client who needs to generate page numbered grid on their map reports.  This resembles a Delorme Gazetteer.  Here is an example:  mygeocachingprofile.com/images/DeLorme.GA.jpg


Essentially, the numbers in the grid of the overview map would correspond to the page numbers to the actual scaled map.


I know I use the grid ordornant layer, but I am not sure of the development logic to slice each map into sections and put them on the correct page number.  Any suggestions?  As I am typing this, some ideas are popping up in my head.  I value your input.

   I want to make sure I understand this.  Do you want us to help with creating one map that has the grid on it and is numbered?  Do you also want us to help actually slicing the map so you have sub map bounding boxes so you can then print separately?  Do you also only want the grid on the areas that intersect the shape?  If so i think I know what you want and we can build a sample of this for you and post it to the code community.  Give us until Monday and I think we can give you exactly what you want.  Any additional information would be great as well, we could do it sooner but I need to schedule it for Friday.  Sorry about the wait.

 Thank you so much for taking the time to assist me on the requirement of this project!   My apologies for not responding quicker.  I have been busy working on other requirements. 
  
 The way I envision this to work is as follows: 
  
 User selects preview map to generate the report.   (The report has costing information at the beginning, followed by a map legend, then the overview map with the numbered grid.)   Currently there is an option to produce the map to scale based on miles. 
  
 User will also be able to print the whole report or certain page numbers.  Essentially, that is it in a nutshell. 
  
 The maps that Yale and Val came up with will satisfies my client’s request.   I will definitely take a look the source code that Yale and Val submitted. 
 and get back with you soon.  THANKS TO ALL who contributed.
