Changing Map Cursor

With a few operations on the map control, I would like to be able to set the cursor to something other than default. For example, in one instance, I'm trying to set the cursor to be the cross. It doesn't seem that I'm able to do this. Is there something I'm missing?

I have been unsuccessful at making the cursor change, as well.
