We have an application built using the Web edition, and are interested in some of the features of the WMS server edtion, like load balancing, tiling, separating the map rendering from the web server etc. What needs to be addressed in changing the code in our application to make use of the WMS Server? Is this a large undertaking?

First of all, WMS is standard that specifies a set of HTTP interfaces for requesting map images from servers implemented the standard. Basically, you can get a map image by sending WMS Server a HTTP web request providing some parameters if the server implemented the GETMAP interface.
How much work needs to be done in changing the code in Web Edition to make use of the WMS Server Edition depends on what the specified implementation of you web application. Could you please provide us one of your code samples in your web application which you want to apply to WMS Server so that we can have a detailed discussion about this issue?
Another advice for you is to take a look at the WMS Implementation Specification first, and then try our WMS Server Evaluation Edition. In this way you can have a general idea of how WMS Server works.
