Edit Layer and Save

Hi, I'm still in the investigating phase of GIS, so all is new to me. We are looking at the MVC suite but I do have a few questions:


I went through all the examples and understand them well. One thing missing from the examples is how to save a layer that has been edited by a user to either a shape file or SQL Server 2008. What we will need is for the app to allow the user to build his own shape file by drawing lines adding points etc. and the save the layer to edit or view it later on.


Can anybody point me to a example or article discussing this?

Thanks for evaluating our products and welcome to Map Suite forum. 


Sorry that our examples didn’t demonstrate how to save a layer into a shape file or Sql clearly. But we can do some changes to the installed sample “DrawEditShapes” to fit the requirements. The attached is a demo code on it, please check it out.


 


In attached file, we just show how to save shapes into a shape file. As for saving to mssql2008featurelayer, please check this post:

This is exactly what I was looking for.


I am nervous about our upcoming GIS development project. I have talked to some developers who have done GIS systems and they really scared me. They said it took them a year with 3 developers to develop an average GIS system. I can't see this happening with the ThinkGeo tools. It took me literally a few hours to build pretty neat functionality with the evaluation tool I have downloaded.


Do I miss something or is it really that difficult to build GIS systems? It sounds that those developers I talked to tried to developed their own tools instead of using a tool like ThinkGeo.

Strictly and to some extent, I guess they are correct if we build our own GIS tool without any straightforward ready-to-use component and any GIS technology, you didn’t miss anything, in that case, we need to learn most of the things mentioned at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geogra...ion_system and implement them with coding based on the detailed requirements.  But with the help of a straightforward and ready-to-use GIS component, all these will be simplified a lot, we just need to develop GIS software as normal application, it will make things easy, because it wrapped these complicated calculation, transformation and technical term etc. into simple APIs, we just need to follow the documentation,   full-featured installation samples and ready-to-use online guide/samples to implement it.
