How to deal with Shapefile (.SHP) ? need help!

I need to build my own map to my university with Shapefile (.SHP) and i want to deal with its entities as objects in order to find the path for each entity and adding this path in my map to create ( GIS Guide Map ) in my project . In other hand , if i can convert AutoCAD map to Shapefile and deal with its objects.

So, please help me how i can do that ???

 You can look at FME from safe.com to convert an Autocad file to a shapefile.  Good luck on your project.
