How to safely change mapunit

Dear support,

working with 3.1.302, I've the following issue.

I display a blank map, with overlay created but with no layers.

I've tiling and preview tiling on.

At that time, mapunit is metric and the extent is no set.

If I change mapunit from metric to degres, sometime, I get a large red cross at the place of the map.

The reason seems to be that the extent is set to values that are not compliant with degres.

Somewhere I should adapt the extent but I've no idea of what extent to put, just because I've no layers loaded.

Am I clear, can you help me?

Well, you have to define in what Map Unit you are going to work with. Once you have your Map Unit defined and you are working with data in that unit, then you have to stay in that unit. You can’t just switch from one unit to another.  
  
 If you decide to use Decimal Degrees, then the extent has to be in the range of -180-180 for the x and -90-90 for the y. If you are using meters or feet, then the range can be a lot higher. If yout set your extent to something like (-1000000,50000,1000000,-500000) and you have the map unit set to Decimal Degrees, this is not going to be valid. Such an extent is for meters or feet.
