can you give me some information on the tolerance / toleranceUnit - parameter of the simplify() method.
What does this mean if I set unit=meter, tolerance = 0.8 when using simplyfication type TopologyPreserving.
Does this mean the maximum offset to original shape is 0.8 meter?

That is correct. The tolerance is in the unit of the data itself and ensures that the new geometry will not deviate further than the tolerance from the original geometry. If the map was decimal degrees then a tolerance of 1 would be 1 decimal degree, 1 meter is in meters and 1 foot if in feet.
