Querying ArcServer with ArcGISServerRestOverlay?

Has anyone needed to use ArcServer for querying data instead of simply returning an overlay?  If so, do you have samples of how to do this?  We need access to the data behind the overlays, not just the overlay.

 It looks nobody else met your same problem till now. 
  
 I am sorry last time I haven’t solve your problem about save image in ArcSdeFeatureLayer. Sorry because the problem comes from OSGeo.FDO so that I cannot solve that for you, but only report that to our developer. 
  
 And if you only want to get the image from ArcGISServer, maybe you can try to merge cached tiles when you are using ArcGISServerRestOverlay.
