Your thoughts on Out-Of-Browser support in Silverlight

Greetings, Silverlight Edition developers!



We're interested in gathering your feedback and opinions on Out-Of-Browser support in Silverlight.  Are you using OOB with Silverlight in any other applications today?  How are you using it?  What drove you to use OOB support with your applications?  What do you like or dislike about how OOB works?



Your responses can help shape the future of the Map Suite Silverlight Edition GIS control, including consideration for Out-Of-Browser support, so don't hesitate to let us know your thoughts.

We are already in the planning stage for the next version of out map based product.  We will be basing the new product around Silverlight and were planning to allow it to be run OOB.  



Reasons for Silverlight - at the moment we have to maintain 3 code bases. Win forms for the desktop and tablet client, web forms for our web based console and CE.Net for the Windows Mobile 6.1 client. We would like a lot more re-use of code in the next version so will be building around Silverlight. We are already well underway with the Windows Phone 7 version. 



A lot of out customers are field workers using tablets. They are often out of range of a phone signal and have to run in offline mode. With the current win forms version this is not problem. With the future Silverlight version we must have a way of providing mapping in offline mode.


To clarify, we really need out of browser support.

We are in the proses of evaluating the Silverlight map component, our requirement is to have OOB(Out of Browser) support, because we are converting some desktop mapwindow gis products to the Silverlight platform.


Our clients is working on farms where there is little or no internet connectivity, and clients with very fast connections, so we need to support online and offline scenarios.


Are the Silverlight map component able to work in the OOB context?

 We like the OOB because it helps to maximize the user's screen real estate (not having to compete with the browser real estate).  We also want to incorporate collaboration and want to take advantage of the "Toast" feature.  


Another thing that would be nice is to work with Shape Files locally through an ODBC connection, which may be possible with OOB.  I haven't research if this is possible or not in Silverlight 4, but may be in Silverlight 5.
